Why do they invent alternate endings in books and movies? I think it’s a cop out. I remember I read a book in school once that had an alternate ending and I thought it was pretty cool But now I don’t think so. As a writer myself I think that offering alternate endings is kind of like cheaping out of making an artitistic decision. Lookat Lost Alternate Endings, which you can buy on dvd now. Do we really get that caught up in pop culture that we are will to spend our hard earned money on Lost Alternate Endings?

Marketing ruins art. Think of marketing and music or marketing and movies, or for that matter marketing and celebrities as spam for art. That’s right. All of these movies and music artists are actually living spam being spammed by the marketers. they push this stuff way too much…like spam. The market basically spams our TV’s and radios with celebrity spam. That’s exactly what it is.

I know people are into Lost and the Lost alternate endings are a big money maker. Jeremy bentham has been on good morning america and the morning show and I know it’s a big deal right now. But to wimp out of an ending just to make a few more bucks from fans of Lost is like spam. I saw an ad before I wrote this post about buying the lost alternate endings at a %25 discount. I can’t believe that people will actually waste their money on this stuff and I can’t believe that the creators are willing to cash in so shamelessly on all of this stuff. If people can’t handle what happens in the last episode of lost and they need lost alternate endings, yet these same people probably bithc about how they can’t afford gas prices.

wow, you are an idiot. The alternate endings are free on Good Morning America, and probably on YouTube later on this afternoon. I just killed your entire post.

You totally missed the point of my post. It’s about the concept of alternate endings not Lost. And besides, some folks wont know about it being on you tube and there actually are people out there selling the alternate ending on dvd you arrogant cocksucker.

I thought the primary reason for the Lost alternate endings was to keep those in the production (actors, crewmen, etc…) in the dark on which is the true outcome - so as not to have folks spoiling the ending accidentally (or otherwise)? I can’t imagine in this situation that a few alternate endings are generating any significant additional interest or revenues beyond what the core series already has established. Either you have a problem with merchandising and capitalising off of a work - period - or you don’t. Just cause you think it’s excessive and you’d draw the line differently, who really cares except you? I guess me if I took the time to even respond to your commentary - oh - crap. Well, screw me to for getting sucked into your moneymaking scheme… So, yeah - capitalism can be ugly, George Lucas is the primary devil to blame and our culture in the US is a credit living, couch sitting, easily panderized to, mostly ignorant to real world events, Walmart shopping wasteland. So, spend YOUR time writing and less on worrying about alternate endings?

Just so you know, the alternate endings to last nights finale were soooo not worth the effort it took me to find them on the internet!

Chris on 30 May, 2008 at 11:03 am #

Steve, you actually have an interesting point that I had not considered…about keeping the ending a secret. But I have to disagree with you because it’s so fucking naive of you to even think that. No wonder I hadn’t thought of it. If that were true, then all movies made would have multiple ending…now get off my blog and get to school!

Shannon–

It doesn’t surprize me at all. It’s all over blown crap anyways. I love “lost” but all this hype about the alternate endings is just friggen cheese ya know?

Daniel on 30 May, 2008 at 12:53 pm #

Steve’s naive? Wow. These alterate endings *were* to hide the real ending.

Why hasn’t this been done before? Actually this happens a lot in movies/shows where the ending is a huge surprise. I know at least that a couple of the Scream (or I know What you Did…) movies did so, and Dawson’s Creek did it a few times.

Chris on 30 May, 2008 at 1:38 pm #

Hey Daniel, why are you answering a question I didn’t ask? Did I say, “Why hasn’t this been done before?” - no I didn’t. I said if that were the reason for the alternate ending then all movies would be made that way.

But my real point is it’s all just hype and you believe it hook line and sinker. “they said that’s why they did it”–no fuckin brains at all.

I’m talking about the dilution of art in our society as a whole you dumbfuck. I don’t give a hoot about the actual alternate ending. I’m talking about big media spoiling art. Just like big money spoiled boxing.

Very few people can really dig what I’m saying because of the way I said it. No one can read between the lines except shannon.

Media at large is spam. Please no more idiotic comments on my blog.

The whole point of this blog is to be politically incorrect when necessary so check out my other posts.

If you comment though you better say something smart cuz if you don’t I’m going to rip your comment to shreds and expose you for the fool you are.

Chris youre really trying way to hard to find deception and dishonesty here.

Yes, alternate endings are often used to make more money and create marketing hype (as is often done when a DVD is released, and then re-released months later with alternate endings).

You’re completely off base saying all movie would be filmed that way if it was true. A majority of movies are about the journey, not the ending. Serial dramas like Lost, or “mystery” flicks like the Scream movies I mentioned gain a lot from the surprise ending. As Lost has shown over the last few years, just having everyone remotely involved sign vows of silence has not been enough to stop their mouths, so multiple takes of an ending is a simple way to help dissuade the leaks.

…but of course, if that was true we’d have alternate endings to The Assassination of Jesse James, and Lord of the Rings, and maybe even Titanic. I wonder if the boat will sink this time!!

Quality art being diluted…I can agree with you there. But spoiled?? Hardly. The definition of art is creativity and inspiration. If another Britney Spears is created or another American Pie is made…that isn’t art. What it’s doing is possibly confusing the public at large’s belief on what true artist expression actually is.

It may anger you, but the crap “spamming” society should not effect your opinion or confidence in art.

Id love to hear you explain just what you mean by “art” there though…that such a broad term that your point is really hard to grasp.

As for your comment on being “politically incorrect”…I’ll really hope you were tongue-in-cheek there. Being “counter-culture” for the sake of being is quite jr. high school. Not being politically correct, and purposely politically incorrect are vastly different things.

Chris on 30 May, 2008 at 3:34 pm #

Ok daniel, you draw some interesting distinctions especially about how some movies (or dramas) are all about the journey and with others it’s about the surprise ending. Ok,well said.

By art I mean music, drama, poetry, painting, movies…all of it.

Look at how many remakes of old movies came out in the last 5 years. Same thing with popular music. Tons of remakes…even the old rockers still have room to hang in there because there is no real talent coming up to replace them.

Where is our Mozart, Shakespeare, picasso, einstein, robert frost, hemmingway, spinoza…? We have shit as a whole. This is because real art is swallowed up in the sea of mediocrity spam.

Inspiration and creativity alone is not art as art is the application. Art is dynamic. Art allows us to see and hear and feel the inspiration and creativity.

Seriously, there is little on the tube to watch these day. When I was a kid there were 3 main channels I could watch. Now there are 999 and you can’t find a fucking thing to watch.

Politically incorrect…I kind of used that term loosely. What I mean is I’m direct even at the expensive of being politically correct.

I’m just giving fair warning as this is a new blog and you guys don’t know me yet. I have a lot to say about a lot of things…and in my own way.

I’m here for lively discussion not phony niceties and what not.

I plan to cover a lot of sensitive and controversial issues and I like the kitchen hot.
